My Review:Overall.... 4.25Performance... 4.25Story.... 4.00Okay, for as long as I've been reading m/m, this book has been on my to read list just because everyone raves about it. When i saw the audio was available, I knew that it was time. And now I get it...just why everyone loves this book. It's a fascinating story about the unlikely romance between two heroes who shouldn't have ever been in a place to fall in love...but then they did. Seriously, LOVE unlikely romances when the author can make it work. And this definitely is an unlikely love story since D is the hitman sent to kill Jack, a surgeon who was unlucky enough to be at the wrong place at the wrong time...which means he's now the key witness against a huge mob boss and everyone is gunning for him. The problem is...D doesn't kill people who don't deserve it. An innocent surgeon falls under that umbrella and D decides to take Jack under his wing and protect him. Just because D doesn't kill him, doesn't mean that other hitmen won't take the job. But there's so much more brewing to this story line...both on D and Jack's side...and as they run for their lives...they both find a new reason why they really need to live. It's a great story and it's very in depth. This is a long book. I'd be listening and look at the audio thinking that the story was winding down only to find that there was still over 4 hours left. I love that. This is a story that will definitely leave you satisfied. There's so much to love about this story. I love the grey area of what D does...he truly is a bad guy, but has a great moral code and finding out exactly why/how he got to this place was heartbreaking. I like that the author took that fact and used it. Jack truly does have an issue with D's history. While he understands, he isn't sure that he can accept that reality longterm, even if D leaves the business. That was a great reality in this fictional world. Jack is so super-intelligent...the best scene in the book when he's on the stand proving what a prick the defense attorney is...I was laughing out loud. And this isn't one of those books where the bad guys are caught and everything is tied up in a tidy little bow. The author truly does add those touches of reality to it all that make it fabulous...and easier to believe the happily ever after when it does come. I adored the way she ended the book. It was just really good.

The only thing that made "Zero At The Bone" tolerable is Alan Smith's narration.Finishing this book became an exercise in stubbornness for me. I actually threw my hands up and marked as DNF...not once, but twice! I couldn't get past 26%.But....but! So many of my GR friends gave it 5 stars and raved, raved! So I kept trying. I finally realized many of them seemed to be listening to the audio book, rather than reading the book. So I thought to myself, "Self? Maybe you should try listening to the audio book this time around? Maybe then you'll actually finish it and see why people love it so much. Maybe you'll love it too then!"So I did. I bought the audio book through Amazon's "Immersion Reading" narration program. And I realized something...while this book is completely and totally abysmal when reading it, it is not only palatable, but pleasurable, while listening to it. So HUGE kudos to Alan Smith for that seemingly impossible accomplishment. Alan Smith? Wherever you are? FANTASTIC JOB!I grew up in the South. The accent or dialect (whatever) D uses didn't bother me at all when listening, but when reading it? I nearly went out of my mind with all the "cain't" "fer" "ya" "gonna".But Alan Smith manages to infuse life, warmth, and a good bit of sexiness to this story.I was really getting into it, enjoying the book, having a good time, but at the 63% mark there is a glaring "Too Stupid To Live" moment, that, frankly, nearly ruined the whole thing for me. Thankfully, the story gets back on track. At the end of the day, the book is FAR too long. There were three places the story could have come to a comfortable end, while still leaving the door open for more, however, it continued on, and on, and on, until finally ending with (though not quite a cliffhanger) an unquestionably unresolved conclusion.I didn't love it. It was "ok" but I would only recommend the audio book version of the story. Honestly, I will not attempt to read a sequel, if there is one. Though, I might listen to it if Alan Smith narrates. Maybe.

This book definitely has scenes that are not for anyone under the age of 17 or 18. However, the dominant subject matter was not the sex and that's what I find most refreshing about 'Zero at the Bone' by Jane Seville. She's able to describe these two characters with the efficiency that I found endearing and heart-wrenching. Honestly, I fell in love with both these men, because they were both men.The book itself is gorgeous. There are no marks, no bends, and I couldn't be happier with the presentation.Contacting this seller was my only issue. I've bought from the Book Depository before and have always had trouble communicating with them. It's like they aren't speaking the same language. I insert the order number like they ask, and they respond with an email that asks for the order number. I was so upset that I wrote a very rude email back, because it's happened a few times before. I just wish they could answer a question without needing the same information repeated three to four times.Besides all that, I am very happy with my purchase, but, unfortunately, I probably won't buy from this seller again. The book is beautiful, the story is great, but I cannot deal with how hard it is to communicate with the seller.
