While the Doolittle raid didn't avenge Pearl harbour, midway a few months later would do that, it did set that battle up by shocking the then complacent and over confident Japanese into a battle they thought they would win. This book, about the Doolittle raid, not only does how audacious this plan was, how great a man Doolittle was, but his every member of the attack, whether they accepted it or not, were heroes. These men have a nation, mired in despair, hope. This is a great book.

This is a great book. I love all the background and the side stories of all the different personalities involved. The story after the raid and the aftermath of the torture and genocide in China and the air crews by the Japanese is hard to take. But it puts more focus on what little I did know about the whole raid and the muddled history that was passed down. It's why I love good books about history. Plain and simple incredible stories.

James Scott did a lot of research in preparing to write TARGET TOKYO, and it shows. Mr. Scott has written a fat book stuffed with facts. “Stuffed” is the right adjective. Particularly after the raiders have dropped their bombs, the narrative slows to a crawl. Given that the raiders were scattered after dropping their bombs, this is inevitable. Also given the horrific ordeal the ones captured by the Japanese went through, and the scarcely less bad ordeal of those who were injured in landing, it makes the book dismaying reading. It is worth telling, as a reminder of what sort of enemy the US was fighting. For all Mr. Scott’s research, I sometimes doubt what he tells us. For example, he tells us that Doolittle was called ashore from the HORNET just before it sailed to take a phone call from Army Chief of Staff George Marshall. Marshall supposedly wished Doolittle well in his mission. Scott cites Doolittle’s memoirs as his source. I don’t doubt that Doolittle remembered it that way. But I don’t believe Marshall called Doolittle either. Marshall refused to call Eisenhower on D-Day to see what was going on, saying it would distract Eisenhower. A call to Doolittle who was carrying operational responsibility in a way Eisenhower was not, would have distracted Doolittle. I think Marshall wrote Doolittle a letter, as Mr. Scott cites, and Doolittle is misremembering what he would have liked to have happen. I also think Scott is overstating the "avenged" part. By itself, the raid accomplished little. But by helping to provoke the Japanese Navy to attack first Coral Sea and then Midway, it make the avenging of Pearl Harbor possible. Scott's best accomplishment is showing the real courage Doolittle and his men had to have to win through. One more fault: It would also have been helpful to have had maps of where each raider went after dropping bombs. I was constantly consulting an atlas to see where the raiders went.

This reviewer has read probably every book ever published about the Doolittle raid on Japan. They ranged from poor to very good. Mr. Scott's "Target Tokyo" surpasses them all, and I rate his book as outstanding. A good portion of the book consists of information never before published, and I was astounded by this wealth of new material. But let the reader be aware of one thing: Mr. Scott describes in graphic detail Japan's torture, murder, and rape of hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and soldiers who helped most of the raiders reach safety after their mission. He also goes into much detail in describing the brutal treatment received by the eight raiders captured by the Japanese. Only four of these crewmen survived their almost three years of the most barbaric prison conditions imaginable (of the other four, one died of disease and the others were shot after a mock trial). But all of these horrors needed to be told eventually so that readers have no doubts about why we went to war with Japan and why we showed that country no mercy in the final months of World War II. My only criticism (a tiny one) of this fantastic book is its title. "Target Tokyo" implies that only Japan's capital was bombed by the raiders. In fact, four additional cities were also hit. Perhaps the title should have read "Target Japan." That minor observation aside, I encourage everyone with an interest in Jimmy Doolittle's incredible raid on Japan to read this book. The sooner, the better.
